Designed our lakefront home myself years ago. Can’t believe it’s finally happening.
After we bought the property on the north side we built a small cabin. Because the lake is in front of the property, and the frontage road is behind us, the property setbacks would only allow a small home to be built.Years later I went up in the middle of winter. Can’t remember why, but think it was to drop off firewood. Then I saw the neighbors had property markers in the snow. I immediately messaged and asked if they were selling.
Their elderly mom had passed away, and the senior children were trustees. Asked their senior son if they sold it, I’d appreciate a shot at it. Didn’t hear from him after that.
Later, during the next spring there was an older woman unloading furniture from their trailer into a minivan. I offered my help. Come to find out, it was the daughter.
“Are you Damon?”
– Yes
“You’re the one that’s been talking with my brother about buying the lot?”
– Yes!
Few weeks later they ended up putting the lot for sale, and gave me first right of refusal. Long story getting the money during the world melt down a few years ago, but we did.
Fast forward past a couple of years with surveys and zoning, now owning side by side lots it opened up some property setback space, and we can build a full size home. Aiming to finish over winter.
You take for granted the slow day-by-day. But looking back it’s nearly unbelievable seeing ideas I sketched now exist in real life.
- Sketched dock now in the water.
- Sketched pirate ship playground for the kids now at the lake.
- Sketched home now being built.
New level of generational memories about to be unlocked.
