My team has been building out custom agency reporting tools, and the latest is “Retention Risk.”

Shared a post weeks back about how my team looked at client retention of over 200 SEO clients to by industry to see which have the most success.

  • Automotive had the longest retention. That was skewed by a client that we’ve had for 17 years though. 🤩 Adjusted retention was still longest in that industry, coming in at 6.83 years.
  • Shortest was VC/PE/Software clients. No matter how well we set expectations, explaining SEO takes only months to see progress by a year to monetize (because all the money is on page one of Google), they want their money NOW! So they don’t nurture it long enough.

We’ve now taken that data and categorize new clients accordingly.

It’s still not perfect, as we only have a year or two of data in it so far. But look how cool and promising this is.  Now we have a rolling predictor of client count X industry = retention risk.
